The Friend in Need was born from a simple act of service that grew into a movement. In eighth grade, our co-founder Shubhrangshu Debsarkar began volunteering at the Bharat Sebashram orphanage in India, teaching English to underprivileged children. What started as a small effort soon became a life-changing experience. As he built friendships with the children, Shubhrangshu realized the power of education, connection, and service.
Inspired by the idea that young people like him could find meaningful purpose in helping others while also building leadership skills, he invited his close friend Sampurna to join him. Together, they founded The Friend in Need, creating a platform where students could give their time, talent, and compassion to transform lives.
What began with two high school students has now grown into a youth-led nonprofit with a network of dedicated volunteers. Today, we teach around 60 children every week, providing not just lessons in English, but also mentorship, care, and encouragement.
But our work doesn’t stop there. We know there are more children waiting for someone to show up, to listen, and to guide them. That’s why we invite students, professionals, and caring individuals everywhere to join us. Whether you can give an hour a week online, help organize local activities, or support our meal program, your time and skills can make a life-changing difference.

Our Leaders
Shubhrangshu, Sampurna, and Aadeep began teaching underprivileged children while still in high school, balancing studies with service each week. Now in college, Shubhrangshu and Sampurna remain actively involved—continuing to teach, lead, and inspire others. Meanwhile, as he applies to college, Aadeep is leading fundraising efforts to expand our meal program, ensuring more children are nourished and ready to learn.
